Wreck Dive, Bahar ic-Caghaq, Malta
The Lockheed P2V Neptune was built in the U.S. and was purposely used for hunting down submarines and marine patrol. The Royal Airforce worked with Neptune MR 1 planes, however, this plane was damaged with no chance of being repaired during a routine landing at the Malta International Airport in Luqa on 13th of Jan, 1956.
With the collapse of the undercarriage, the aircraft was not able to fly again. After the crash occured, it was then sold for filming to Romulus/Bertram Ostrer Productions in the year 1957, but not before removing all parts that were salvageable.
Finally, the Neptune was scuttled for an underwater scene for the movie called "THE SILENT ENEMY" directed by William Fairchild, starring Laurence Harvey and Dawn Addams, which was aired in 1958. In the late 1950’s, it was scuttled and the wreck was then rediscovered in 2015.
Lockheed P2V Neptune wreck is located 500 meters offshore Bahar ic-Caghaq on the north-east coast of Malta. Lockheed P2V Neptune wreck lies at a depth of 32 meters on a seabed of sand and Posidonia seagrass meadows.
The plane wreck consists of only part of the fuselage without any major internal components and wing stubs with engine covers. The rest of the wings are nearby, half-buried in the sand.
Experience Needed
You must be certified to dive to a depth of 30 meters to dive this site. We would also recommend being a Nitrox Diver.
